The Beyond Earth Institute’s President, Steve Wolfe, will be speaking in support of an additional 18th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to the United Nations 2030 Agenda. While the 2030 Agenda supports sustainability for Earth, the proposed SDG emphasizes civilian-led sustainable space development to benefit continued access to space in its entirety, including planet Earth.

After the U.N. adopted the resolution that “development” is a universal civil right in 1986, the meaning of sustainability became somewhat challenged. Adopting an 18th SDG for the sustainable development of space, allows us to take development elsewhere into outer space and not harm our home planet and its inhabitants. Having an 18th SDG for civilian space development can change all of that.

Wolfe will talk at “Space for All, on Earth and Beyond!” which will be online. The Livestream is June 12, 2023, at 21:00 CEST, 3 p.m. US EDT, and Noon US PDT. Additional speakers include: Alfred Anzaldua, NSS, will report about the June 5th COPUOS session, where NSS and SRI will announce the 18th SDG proposal, Karlton Johnson, Chair of the NSS International Committee), Frank White, Founder of the Human Space Program, creator of the Overview Effect concept, Bob Zubrin, Founder of The Mars Society, John Spencer, President of the Space Tourism Society, Frederick Jenet, Expanding Frontiers, Gabriel Ignetti, Ecomodernist Society of North America, Bernard Foing, SRI President, Madhu Tangavelu, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Armen Papazian, Space Value Foundation.

Other institutions supporting an addition of an 18th SDG, besides The Beyond Earth Institute, include The National Space Society, The Mars Society and Space Renaissance International (SRI). The current list of supporters is quite extensive and can be found at this link: https://spacerenaissance.space/the-space18sdg-proposer-organizations/

Moreover, Adriano Autino, SRI founder and initiator of the 18th SDG, started a petition on Change.org, which asks for signatures calling for the addition of an 18th SDG declaring, “Space for All, on Earth and Beyond.” to the already published U.N. 2030 Agenda. To clarify the goal is to have, “civilian-led space development, with human communities living and working in outer space to expand and multiply benefits to all the peoples of Earth.”
