Once assigned to an LC Working Group according to their relevancy and preference, a chair will be selected by the BE executive team, and a support team will be assigned. The flow of activities of the LC Working Groups will engage according to the following schedule, beginning in 2024:

  1. WG support team will prepare and distribute background materials on the topic to participants
  2. Participate in a full LC virtual kick-off meeting (in January)
  3. Participate in two (2) virtual working group sessions to define potential topic areas (in the February-April timeframe)
    1. Session 1: Brainstorming the range of challenges and possible policy recommendations to meet those challenges
    2. Session 2: Refining issues and recommendations and prioritizing those most critical
  4. Attend an in-person workshop at Biosphere II in Arizona, present WG preliminary recommendations, workshop refinement, and finalize recommendations (in June/July)
  5. Assist in editing report on WG recommendations
  6. Attend the in-person Beyond Earth Symposium in Washington, DC to share and discuss recommendations to the wider space policy community (September-October)
  7. The Beyond Earth Annual Policy Priority Report contains the recommendations derived from WG deliberations. Before publishing, members are asked to review the draft for comment.
  8. The final BE annual report is issued in Q4. BE members are asked to share the report with policymakers and space industry influencers.
  9. Assist in identifying the Working Group topics for the following year.

The Basics of Member Participation Opportunities

Though the impact of the Leadership Council will be significant, we seek to keep the time required for participation to a minimum, mindful of busy schedules. Here’s how WG members will participate:

  1. Determine which Working Groups you’ll want to participate on and who will participate (could be multiple)
  2. Participate in 2-3 virtual facilitated discussion sessions to deliberate on policy options – no more than 1.5 hours per session
  3. Attend an in-person 1 -day workshop in June/July
  4. Assist in reviewing draft output documents
  5. Share the output reports with space sector colleagues
